The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has designated the Mount Verno–Vitsi area, in the north of the country, as a Protected Landscape. Part of this territory falls within the LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors project area, and the new status strengthens long-term protection for habitats that matter to brown bears, to wildlife more broadly, and to the ecological connectivity between populations.
The designation follows the scientific work of CALLISTO , carried out in close cooperation with local experts, the Municipal Community of Nymfaio and the Municipality of Amyntaio. It shows how data, knowledge of the ground and a shared vision can turn into a concrete conservation measure.
The new framework also shields the landscape from developments incompatible with its ecological value, an important step in an area where habitat connectivity is what allows bears to move safely.
