Rewilding Apennines leads pioneering removal of river barriers

Supported by funding from the Open Rivers Programme, the Rewilding Apennines team have overseen the removal of five barriers on the Giovenco River. This is a critical step forward in restoring the natural dynamics of the river system, breathing new life into the landscape and delivering benefits to local communities.

The aim of the LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors initiative is to enhance human-bear coexistence in Italy, Greece, and further afield. The initiative’s well-attended first two public meetings, in the towns of Pettorano sul Gizio and Vastogirardi in the Central Apennines rewilding landscape, proved very positive and educational events.

Rewilding Experiences: join the field activities to know about rewilding

Rewilding Apennines extends its program to make people experience the rewilding initiatives in the Central Apennines.
The “Rewilding Experiences” are born, 3 possibilities to join the rewilding field actions. It is possible to join on the field for one day or for a one-week experience. For organizations, a two-day customized format has been designed to get them acquainted with rewilding principles.
