The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has published the first Guidelines for Rewilding, an international reference document that defines the principles, methods, and objectives for the rewilding of landscapes.

A delegation from the esteemed U.S. organization “People & Carnivores” is visiting the Central Apennines. Since 1992, this organization has worked to promote coexistence between rural communities in North America and large carnivores such as black bears, grizzly bears, wolves, and mountain lions. The purpose of this visit is to engage in constructive dialogue with the international organization to evaluate and exchange best practices, with the aim of improving human-bear coexistence strategies in the Central Apennines.

Following the experience on the Giovenco River last year, a new initiative is about to take shape to remove an unused and obsolete weir on the Liri River, in the territory of San Vincenzo Valle Roveto. This project is part of “Wild Lyric,” conducted by Rewilding Apennines and funded by the Open Rivers Programme and Rewilding Europe.

In 2026, Italy’s Central Apennines will become the focal point of international bear conservation, focusing on the Marsican brown bear and coexistence between people and wildlife. From September 20 to 25, Pescasseroli will host two significant gatherings: the International Conference of the IBA – International Association for Bear Research and Management – and the final conference of the LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors initiative.

“The Central Apennines: A Story of Co-existence” is a beautiful short film by award-winning French filmmaker Emmanuel Rondeau. Featuring interviews with a range of passionate and dedicated people, it shows how rewilding efforts in Italy’s Central Apennine mountains are creating conditions where local communities and wildlife can live and thrive together.

Approximately 2,500 genetically characterized Mediterranean trout fry will be released into the Romito stream in Morino, part of the Liri River basin, thereby revitalizing the river ecosystem.

Supported by funding from the Open Rivers Programme, Rewilding Apennines will oversee the removal of five weirs on the Giovenco River. This will breathe new life into the river ecosystem and deliver benefits to local communities.
