The year 2024 was marked by significant milestones for Rewilding Apennines. We realized some of our most ambitious dreams, opening new paths and experimenting with innovative initiatives that filled us with enthusiasm, pride, and, most importantly, a precious energy. It is this energy that will drive us to make new dreams come true and achieve the goals that await us in the coming year.
On World Earth Day, we want to be proactive and share an open letter sent to regional, national and European institutions to counter the risk of further water abstraction from the spring that feeds the Rio Verde River and its namesake Falls, compromising the entire river ecosystem!
A public event aims to make the public aware of the multiple ecological roles of the white-clawed crayfish, the threats to the survival of this unique subspecies of the Central Apennines and the commitment of organizations and entities to rewilding for its return to watercourses.
Thanks to the Rewilding Apennines commitment and the nature resilience, the Verde River at Borrello is slowly repopulating of crayfish.
Funding from Fondation Ensemble will support the comeback of griffon vultures, Apennine chamois and white-clawed crayfish in the Central Apennines rewilding landscape. This contributes to the area’s overall rewilding vision and is good news for nature and people.
An agreement has been formalized in order to improve the protection of this river species
The white-clawed crayfish, which is a keystone species in freshwater ecosystems, is in decline across much of Europe. A positive feasibility study carried out on streams in the Central Apennines rewilding area means a restocking programme can now be carried out, thereby enhancing the ecological condition of these waterways.
